Predeparture Information
The Northern Kingdoms

Most of the people who visit Peru are amazed by the Inca archaeological sites. Without doubt Machu Picchu is the most famous. But Peru has much more. A trip to Chachapoyas gives you the opportunity to admire part of the Peruvian history in a remote corner of northeastern Peru. In this area the Chachapoya culture, well-known as the Cloud forest people, developed an interesting society between AD 800 until they were conquered by the Incas in 1470 after a bloody war.

The Chachapoyas were excellent engineers and they chose strategic places for their settlements and fortifications according the characteristics of area (Remote forest hills with heavy rains). They also were very respectful for their ancestors that is why they also looked for really special places for their burial buildings.

The area has photogenic landscapes and different little and charm communities where you will find warm and friendly people. It is important to mention that just a few number of people speak English for that reason it is important to have bilingual guide,

All our regular itineraries start in Chiclayo and include the following highlights: Kuelap fortress, the Macro towers, the burial buildings of Revash and the interesting Museum of Leymebamba that keeps mummies found at La Laguna de los Condores. You can not imagine how well-preserved the mummies are. It reflects the excellent technology used by the ancient Chachapoyas embalmers. Then you will return to Chiclayo.

For those who will take the Chachapoyas Explorer, the highlights included are: Kuelap fortress, Revash burial buildings, Macro towers, La Congona (a Chachapoyas settlement), drive the route from Leymebamba to Celendin and the next day to Cajamarca, a charming city with its colonial houses, cathedral, Main square, The Cuarto de Rescate (where Atahualpa, the last Inca, was held as prisoner), churches, and also the Ventanillas de Otuzco, The area is excellent for avid photographers. Special programs for birdwatchers can be arranged according your expectations.

The journeys to Lost World of Chachapoyas are operated by our well-equipated office in Chiclayo. We use 4 wheel drive cars, van and/or minibus with air conditioner and good guides. At the moment there are unsurfaced roads in Chachapoyas and they could be in not good conditions (specially after the rains) but it is part of the your adventure.

Please note that on all programs a certain level of physical fitness is required. You will trek for 2 to 3 hours and ride a horse.
